Students will learn basic accounting principles required in keeping accurate financial records for a business. Students will learn how to record and analyze the daily activities of a business. Students will create financial statements such as Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Bank Reconciliation Statements and Capital Statements. Microsoft Excel software is used to create computerized business forms. This course is an entry level course for all students with an interest in business.

The accounting principles learned in Accounting I will be expanded and further developed using more complex business situations. They will be applied to the departmental and corporate systems. This class is totally computerized--using spreadsheets and accounting software. This is a good choice for any student who plans to major in business or work in an accounting or financial field.

This course allows students to explore a career in banking. You will learn about bank financial services including loans and deposit services, behind the scenes operations, and the Federal Reserve. It is the foundation course for all banking classes. Opportunities are available for working at a bank in an entry level position such as teller if you have an A-B average with good attendance. Students are also encouraged to enroll in Computerized Accounting I.

The intent of this course is to inform students how individual choices directly influence occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real world topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing. Students will design personal and household budgets, utilize checking and savings accounts, gain knowledge in finance, debt and credit management, and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes. This course provides a foundation for making informed personal financial decisions.

Students learn touch typing with emphasis on good technique, speed, accuracy and proofreading. Students learn to produce simple documents such as reports, letters, and memos. Extra reinforcement is included to help the non-English speaking student produce accurate documents. It is a prerequisite for all computer classes. ESOL students with ELL levels of 3 should take regular keyboarding if available.

 


 Computer Technology - Software Applications


 

All Students: Computer Applications I and II cover the fundamental computer skills needed to do well in high school and needed in all careers.

College-Bound Students: College-bound students need to complete at least Computer Applications I - III. Many students can complete the three courses in one school year. Some universities are in the process of either doing away with their computer applications courses or making them no-credit courses. Students are expected to be able to use word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and sometimes web-page software when they enter college. The advanced computer applications classes help prepare students for careers that demand a higher level of computer knowledge, such as business, computer technology, or communications

Students learn the fundamental word processing skills necessary to produce simple documents. They create and edit documents of various types using bullets, numbered lists, special characters, borders and shading, special fonts, and paragraph and line formatting. Internet searching and research skills are heavily stressed in this course to help prepare them for other classes. Students are given e-mail accounts and trained to use them properly. They learn to create and edit simple spreadsheets using the basic formulas and functions. They also create and present a PowerPoint project. All students should take this course. To achieve an "A" in this course, students must complete an accelerated high school curriculum which advances them to CA III.

Students learn intermediate spreadsheet skills, including formatting numbers, formatting the look of your spreadsheet, using styles, and using common functions, and producing technical graphs and charts. Students are given e-mail accounts and trained to use them properly. They continue in word processing learning to use sections and headers and footers; print envelopes and labels; use tables; use columns; use graphic elements; use, create, and modify styles and templates, and do mail merges. Projects include a report researched on the Internet in both MLA and APA styles, a spreadsheet/graphing research project, a resume and letter of application, and creating a website. All students should take this class to have the computer skills needed to do well in their other classes, college, and careers.

Students learn the basics of creating, editing and using Access by producing various tables, forms and reports. Using FrontPage, students will create their own websites. PhotoShop is used to manipulate and create graphics. Students learn beginning desktop publishing skills using Publisher by creating business cards, newsletters, letterheads, and flyers. They have three culminating real-world projects: a capstone project using Publisher, Word and Access; an all-inclusive desktop publishing project; and a 10-minute presentation to the class using advanced PowerPoint features.

Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take Desktop Publishing II, Web Design and Multimedia Productions, and Advanced Databases/Spreadsheets.

Students learn to use desktop publishing techniques to create brochures, complex programs for various events, newsletters and special-size documents (like CD covers and invitations). They learn the principles of good design and how to effectively use graphical features in publications. Students completed the skills from Desktop Publishing I in CA III. This course is especially helpful for students interested in marketing, advertising, office administration, journalism, education or other careers that depend on high-quality printed documents.

Students will learn how to use media equipment (digital camera, camcorder, video capture device, and scanner). Students will create multimedia PowerPoint presentations, web pages (using FrontPage and HTML), and videos (using Adobe Premiere). Emphasis will be based on good design as well as technical skill as students incorporate the proper combination of text, graphics, video, and sound. Students also use Adobe Photoshop, Flash to edit, and produce animations and graphics.

Web Technologies--SHS

10, 11, 12—1 year, 1 credit

Prerequisite: CA III

This course is an exploration of all of the elements of good web page design. Students will begin by creating web pages using HTML. Students will investigate several Adobe software packages to enhance web sites such as:

• Adobe PhotoShop to create and edit graphics

• Adobe Flash to create animations and web banners

• Adobe Fireworks to create and optimize images for the web

• Adobe Premiere to create and edit videos and audio

• Adobe Soundbooth to create and edit music

Students will learn how to use web design software such as Dreamweaver to create interactive web pages. Students will also use multimedia equipment such as digital cameras, camcorders, video capture devices and more. Students will complete several real-world projects such as Flash videos and web pages for the school websites and local businesses.

Advanced Database--SHS

Students with advanced knowledge of database are widely sought after in today’s era of huge databases as evidenced in companies such as Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart vendor companies, JB Hunt, Tyson, and the like. Students will work with multiple table operations, forms and reports. Students will learn advanced database features to manipulate and present data through advanced queries, calculated controls, macros, switchboards, subforms, subreports, joins, relationships, and more. This course covers the integration of database systems and WWW pages. Students will also be provided the technical skills to write basic SQL queries. Students will complete several real-world projects.

Advanced Spreadsheet-SHS

10, 11, 12—1 senester, 1 credit

Prerequisite: CA II

In today’s world students must not only be able to use advanced spreadsheet tools, they must be able to analyze the data to maximize a company’s profits. In this course, students will define and solve financial, logical, and financial problems using Excel. Students will design, create, update and maintain workbooks, professional charts, templates, macros, pivot tables. Students will write formulas, link and consolidate multiple worksheets, create lookup tables, and explore other advanced features. Emphasis will be on the student’s ability to analyze business data to make decisions about products, projects and strategic forecasting using real-world data.

Emphasis is on fundamental programming concepts using good design and programming techniques that will transfer to other languages. This course is for students who plan to major in business. IT, computer science, engineering and other technology fields. This course requires good logic skills.

Introduction to Object Oriented Programming--SHS

Prerequisite: Algebra I with a C or better and Keyboarding

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Note: CA I is NOT a prerequisite for this class.

There is a high demand for programmers and software engineers with high wages. This course will teach programming to beginners in a fun, exciting manner. Students will create worlds populated with objects, creatures, and people and animate them. Using these techniques, students will be able to tell animated stories, create dance routines, create interactive video games with 3D characters, etc. They can take their programs and convert them to videos or use them on web sites. While doing this, students will learn fundamental programming logic and techniques with instructions that correspond to standard statements in Java, C++, and other production languages. Doing well in this course qualifies the student to take AP Computer Science. This course is designed to be a non-threatening beginning course for all students, including those students who might be leery of a highly technical course.

Visual Basic is a language that is widely-used professionally for writing Windows XP programs. Students write programs that have pull-down menus, command buttons, dialog boxes and other features of Windows programs. Students use arrays, learn to handle strings, sort data, read and write data to files, access databases, and link applications using DDE and OLE. This can be taken as the first programming class.

This course is the equivalent of the first-year course in computer science at colleges and universities. It emphasizes object-oriented programming methodology as well as the study of algorithms, data structures, and abstraction. Students who score sufficiently high on the AP exam may be granted college credit from participating universities. This course is for students planning on majoring in computer science, engineering, IT, mathematics or other technical fields.

12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Prerequisites: Advanced Computer Applications or Advanced Programming Class, Application AND Teacher Approval

In this project-based course, you are assigned actual technology projects from the school district and local businesses. This class is responsible for the high school website which can be accessed, for Springdale High School at http://shs.springdaleschools.org, or through the Springdale Public Schools website for the new school (http://springdaleschools.org) and this publication. The projects may include creating presentations, creating advanced databases, etc. Students who are chosen will be expected to maintain high ethical standards and produce timely, quality work as well as behave in a responsible, dependable manner. Students who do not meet these criteria, have excessive absences, or have disciplinary issues may be dropped from the class with an "F" or no credit.

Students learn the concepts, principles, skills, and attitudes common to marketing. Topics include distribution, finance, pricing, promotion, purchasing, selling, risk management, and computer applications. This is a prerequisite for Marketing Management. Marketing Management develops decision-making skills through the application of marketing and management principles. It focuses on organization, finance, advertising, buyer behavior, technology, and social aspects. One exciting curriculum project involves management of a fantasy sports team. Responsibilities include designing team logo, stadium, and ticket packages. Although it is not mandatory, students are encouraged to enroll in Marketing Apprenticeship/Work Based Learning. 49234A/49234B/49234C/49234D Marketing Apprenticeship/Work-Based Learning--SHS, HBHS

11, 12 - 1 year, 1 or 2 credits

Prerequisite: Enrollment in Marketing or Marketing Mgmt.

Students must be employed in a marketing job. They will earn 1 or 2 credits per year. Grading is done by conferences between the employer and the teacher. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA, a good discipline and attendance record, and work a minimum of 270 hours per semester. Students are required to join DECA, a vocational student organization for marketing students. Dues are $15 and must be submitted with application.
