New Arrival Center--SHS

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 3 credits

Prerequisite: Teacher and Counselor approval or lived in the USA less than 6 months and no knowledge of English

 

The New Arrival Center (NAC) is a three hour block of English immersion for students who have lived in the United States six months or less and have very little to no knowledge of the English language. The class covers basic linguistics such as phonics and pronunciation, spelling, grammer, and syntax. There is also rigorous practice to develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. In addition, language acquisition is taught through an American History component which spans from basic geography concepts to the Civil War.

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 2 credits

Open to MACII Level 1 students

 

In this 2 hour class, students are introduced to the basic structures and lexicon of English. Survival skills emphasized. TPR and thematic units are used extensively. Students enroll for 2 periods of English I and earn 1 credit of English and 1 elective credit.

Open to MACII Level II students

 

More complex sentence structures and grammar are introduced in this class. The fundamentals of paragraph organization and development will be stressed. Students will participate in formal  and informal speaking situations. Vocabulary acquisition continues to be emphasized. English credit.

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Open to MACII Level III students

 

This course is designed to build overall fluency and proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Academic language, study skills, and learning strategies are emphasized as well. Technology is integrated throughout the course. Independent reading is encouraged. English credit.

Required course for graduation. 

 

Political parties and the presidential election  process, the powers and influence of the modern day presidency, Congress and how it operates, Congressional reform, and the US and the world today are covered.

This is a  study of our historical heritage with the emphasis from the Civil War to the present time.  It fulfills the American History requirement for the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship.

This is a study of events, which have shaped civilization since the beginning of recorded history. The events are political, social, and economic in nature. A chronological approach is used. The class is project oriented with an emphasis on multi-cultural achievements in history. It fulfills the World History requirement for Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship.

This course is a basic approach to the study of Algebra with amphasis placed on the acquisitioin of algebraic skills and concepts. Algebra I consists of four 9-week modules, A, B, C, & D. Students who require more time may be placed in a block class.

Geometry is a course that follows Algebra I. Students study the basic geometric figures while developing an understanding of the formal structure and proof of geometry. This course helps students develop skills in logical thinking needed in higher mathematics.


Spanish


54010A/54010B Spanish for Spanish Speakers--SHS, HBHS

10,11,12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Open to all Native Spanish speakers

 

This class addresses the language needs of native Spanish speakers and provides instruction to expand existing proficiency in Spanish. Spelling rules and Hispanic cultures are studied through different literature selections.

 

54007A/54007B AP Spanish Language and Composition--SHS, HBHS

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Prerequisite: B in Spanish III,  IV, or Spanish for Spanish Speakers and teacher recommendation

 

This course is intended for students who wish to develop proficiency and integrate their language skills beyond the classroom, using authentic materials and sources. Students who enroll should already have a basic knowledge of the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples and should have attained a reasonable proficiency using the language. This course is meant to be comparible to fifth and sixth semester college and university courses that focus on speaking and writing at an advanced level. Students are encouraged to take the AP exam administered in May. This course is taught in Spanish.

 

54008A/54008B AP Spanish Literature--SHS

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Prerequisites: Spanish IV, Spanish for Spanish Speakers or AP Spanish Language and teacher recommendation.

 

This course is designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of a third-year college course in Spanish and Latin American literature, and is designed to introduce students to the formal study of authentic editions of short stories, novels, poetry, dramas and essays. Students will develop all communicative Spanish skills with special emphasis on vocabulary and academic language relevant to literary analysis. A summer reading assignment will be provided upon enrollment. Students are encouraged to take the AP exam in May. This course is taught in Spanish.

 

NOTE: Students may take both exams if they choose, thereby demonstrating achievement in both language and literature at the third year college level.

Students will study fundamental physical and earth science as well as basic physics, chemistry, oceanography, and astronomy. Science credit.

This course  is designed to be a study of  the scientific and social issues relating to biology. The course is project-centered with an emphasis on lab and field work, including a trip to Lake Fayetteville Environmental Study Center.

This is a laboratory investigative approach to the understanding of chemistry as a science.  Students gather information related to the structure of matter and seek to arrange this information into meaningful patterns.  Laboratory experiments demonstrate chemical principle covered in classroom work.  Use of basic algebra is an essiental.

This is an investigative approach surveying the environmental science, meterology, space science through a major emphasis on ecological interactions and man’s use of the earth and its resources.

Open to all MACII levels

This a study of the science of matter and energy with includes motion, heat, sound, light, electricity and magnetism.  Emphasis is on problem solving.


Business and Technology


69005C/69005D Structured Keyboarding--SHS, HBHS

10, 11, 12 - 1 year, 1 credit

Prerequisite: ESOL Status  (MACII Levels 1-2 only)

Supplies Fee: $8 or 3 reams of copier paper

 

Students learn touch typing with emphasis on good technique, speed, accuracy and proofreading. Students learn to produce simple documents such as reports, letters, and memos. Extra reinforcement is included to help the non-English speaking student produce accurate documents. It is a prerequisite for all computer classes.  ESOL students with MAC II levels of 3 should take regular keyboarding.

Software: Office 2003 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Prerequisite: MACII Levels  2-3 Only and Structured Keyboarding  OR Keyboarding Applications OR  Keyboarding with an A or B

Supplies Fee: $10 / 4 reams of copier paper.

 

This is the equivalent of Computer Applications I, but is specially modified to  meet the needs of ESOL students.  This course is open to only students with ESOL standing. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take Structured Computer Applications II-III.

Software: Office 2003 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), FrontPage, and Publisher

Prerequisite:   Structured CA I and teacher approval from previous Structured CAI teacher

Supplies Fee: $10 / 4 reams of copier paper.

 

This is the equivalent of Computer Applications II and III, but is specially modified to meet the needs of ESOL students. This course is open to only students who have successfully completed Structured CA I. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take Desktop Publishing II, Web Design and Multimedia Productions, and Advanced Databases/Spreadsheets.
