SCHOLARSHIP Priority DEADLINE

There are five primary sources of funding for college: the Federal Government, College and Universities, Private Scholarships, Self-Help and State Aid.  College Tips gives you a current list of college scholarships, and scholarships contests to enter.  Stop by the counseling office for applications or go online at www.springdaleschools.org.  

 Remember – Watch out for Scholarship Scams

1.      Win a college scholarship of $1,000 by registering online at www.eCampusTours.com.  This is a free National Scholarship Search that helps students scope out potential scholarships from an extensive database.

2.      Register to win $1,500 scholarships at www.nextSTEPmagazine.com

3.      The Culinary Institute of America is the world’s leading culinary college.  They have scholarships and admission information at www.ciachef.edu.  

4.      The Honors College at the University of Arkansas offers $50,000 Fellowships, (including the Bodenhamer, Boyer, and Sturgis scholarships), Undergraduate Research Opportunities, Study Abroad Scholarships, Honors Housing and Priority Registration.  For more information go to - honorscollege.uark.edu. DEADLINE:  February 1, 2008.

5.      There are three scholarships from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund the College Scholarship Program, the Community College Transfer Scholarship Program, and the High School Scholarship Program. Applications are available at www.hsf.netDEADLINE:  February 15, 2008.

6.      The Chapel of Four Chaplains has several scholarship competitions including:  an Annual Essay Contest, a National Art Contest and an Annual Project lifesaver contest.  Please go online at www.fourchaplains.org    DEADLINE:  January, 2008.

7.      Boston University offers a Trustee Scholarship.  To enter go online at www.bu.edu/admissions/trustee.   Candidates must have a high school GPA of 3.50 or higher, rank in the top 5% of the class, and have an ACT score of 32 or higher.   DEADLINE:  December 1, 2007.

8.      Simmons First National Bank offers student scholarships of $3000 for students enrolled in a postsecondary institution.  For more information go to www.simmonsfirst.com.

9.       Register now for a $1,000 scholarship at www.bankofamerica.com/studentsweeps

10.   The SAE –Society of Automotive Engineers – offers Engineering Scholarships to qualified students.  These corporate sponsored scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $10,000.  For more information or an application, stop by the counseling center or go to www.sae.org/students/scholarships.   DEADLINE:  December 1, 2007.

11.   The Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund offers scholarships for federal employees and their dependents.  For information go online at www.feea.org.

12.   Enter the NO-Addiction 5th Annual Essay Contest & win college scholarships and savings bonds.  High School students need to write a 300 word essay to tell why they have chosen to stay away from drugs and alcohol and what they are personally doing to further prevention and awareness efforts within the school and community.  20 winners will each receive a $500 scholarship.  Guidelines are available online at www.NO-ADdiction.org.  DEADLINE:  December 31, 2007.

 The Academic Common Market sponsored by SREB allows students in several Southern states to enroll in selected programs at public institutions in other states and pay in-state tuition. For a list of schools in this program go to the SREB website, www.sreb..org

13.  The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation offers college scholarships of up to $10,000 a year, over a four-year period.   In order to be eligible for this scholarship, an applicant must satisfy the following requirements:  *have lost a parent to breast cancer, *reside within the service area of an established Komen Affiliate., *plan to attend a state-supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside, *have a GPA of 2.80, *be a U. 14.  The THEA Foundation offers the Thea Leopoulous Arts Scholarship program for qualified seniors who are interested in the visual arts (two-dimensional – any medium), and performing arts (acting/dance/voice).  Each year the THEA Foundation has the potential to provide 20 seniors with significant scholarship dollars.  To pick up an application go online at www.theafoundation.org.   DEADLINE:  December 1, 2007.

15.   The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Registration Guides are available in the counseling office.  The PROFILE must be completed for seniors to apply for financial aid at selected colleges.  The list of colleges that require the PROFILE is available in the counseling center along with applications.  Or, a student may go online at www.collegeboard.com.  REGISTRATION begins on October 1, 2007 and runs through January, 2008.

17.   Go to www.fastweb.com for over 600,000 FREE scholarship searches.

18.  Peterson’s is one of the nation’s most outstanding companies offering catalogs, viewbooks and other admissions/financial aid material.  They are drawing for a $5,000 award to be given to a senior who fills out the new Peterson’s College Survey Program survey.   Go online at www.petersons.com/studentnetworks.  Use the SHS high school code (042315) and the Password (HGC-CC) to enter this competition.

19.   American Indian Scholarships are available to students who are documentable Native American descendants from a federally recognized tribe.  There are three separate programs to consider:

20.   The Kaplan/NEWSWEEK “MY TURN” essay competition allows students to win up to $5,000 for college.  To enter, a student must submit a 500-1,000 word essay on a topic of the student’s choice, where the student shares his or her opinion, experience or personal feeling.  First prize is $5,000, second prize is $2,000 and eight students will receive $1,000 awards.  For more information call 1-800-KAP-TEST or go online at www.kaptest.com/essay. 21.   The Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Washington County offers Scholarship assistance to single parents who reside in Washington County.  For an application go to cmontgo@jtlshop.jonesnet.org.

22.  Head & Engquist Equipment is seeking highly motivated candidates for a high paying career as heavy equipment operators.  This scholarship program will pay for a 72 week training program including all costs of tuition, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses and a basic tool set worth $3,000.  This program is sponsored by Oklahoma State University at the Okmulgee, Oklahoma campus.  For more details call the Heavy Equipment & Vehicle Institute office at 918-756-6211 or go online at www.osu-okmulgee.edu.

24.  The University of Arkansas offers online admissions.  The admission fee that normally accompanies the paper application can be submitted later.  Go to www.uark.edu.   DEADLINE for Early Scholarship Notification:  November 15, 2007.

25.  The National Presbyterian College Scholarships are offered by the Presbyterian Church to affirm excellence in scholastic ability and leadership; to encourage superior students to attend participating Presbyterian-related colleges; and to assist these colleges in identifying such students.  For more information write to: The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Office of Financial Aid for Studies, 100 Witherspoon Street, Louisville, Kentucky, 40202-1396 or call 1-502-569-5745.  DEADLINE:  December 1, 2007.

26.  The Tylenol Scholarship is available to students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.  There is $50,000 in scholarship money available.  Go to Scholarship.Tylenol.com for all the details.

27.   There are Engineering scholarships available for our future leaders across a wide spectrum of fields.  You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.  Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to two questions.  For all the details go to www.aesengineers.com/scholarships

28. The Gates Millennium Scholarship program will select 1000 students to be Gates Millennium Scholars.   The following is a list of criteria for this scholarship:

  • Be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander or Hispanic American
  • Be a citizen/ legal permanent resident or national of the United States
  • Have a GPA of 3.3
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited college or university
  • Have demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular or other activities
  • Meet the Federal Pell Grant Eligibility requirements
  • Complete the application form which you can get online at www.gmsp.org

29.  The American Legion, Department of Arkansas, is offering (4) scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to eligible students.  Selections are based on American spirit, character, leadership quality, scholastic endeavor, and the basis of need.  Below is a list of qualifications:

·        Must be children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of American Legionnaires

·        Must be a senior on track for graduation in May

·        Must provide a copy of the student’s transcript

·        Must submit an autobiography in essay format including career goals and why you are qualified for this scholarship.

·        Applications are in the counseling center:  DEADLINE:  March 15, 2008

·        The American Legion Oratorical Contest is offering scholarships of $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000.  For information go online at www.arlegion.org/oratorical.html.

30. The Georgia Institute of Technology offers a President’s Scholarship worth $29,000 for Arkansas students with an interest in engineering.  Stop by the counseling center or go online at www.psp.gatech.edu. DEADLINE:  October 31, 2007.

31. The University of Missouri-Columbia is offering three scholarships to the College of Business.  Over 700 awards will be granted worth $1 million to incoming and returning students.  Students can download versions of all three scholarships:  The Sam M. Walton, the Robert J. Trulaske Sr., and the Ponder Minority scholarship by going online at www.business.missouri.edu and clicking on “Undergraduate” under “Prospective Students,” then clicking on “Scholarships”.  DEADLINE:  March 1, 2008.

32. The Arkansas Scholarship Connection has a free searchable database of scholarships, financial aid tips, college planning guides, essay writing tips and work study information.  Go to www.arkansasscholarshipconnection.org.

33. The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) has an AMERICANISM Essay Contest for interested students.  The essay shall be on the theme:  “Why I am Proud to be an American”, and should be 350 words in length.  The grand prize for the contest winner is a $15,000 savings bond.  To learn more, go online at www.fra.org/essay.  Or stop by the counseling office for an application.  DEADLINE:  December 1, 2007.

34. The ‘SHOUT IT OUT” Scholarship is sponsored by Scholarship Experts.  The rules are simple.  You must be a U.S. student to apply, and you must answer our scholarship question online in 250 words or less:  “If you could say one thing to the entire world at once, what would it be and why?”   You must apply online by OCTOBER 15, 2007.  Just go to www.scholarshipexperts.com/apply.htx.  

35. BOWLING SCHOLARSHIP!!  The Kenneth Morris Memorial Scholarship is for any senior boy or girl.  Each applicant must bowl AT LEAST 9 games (3 games each visit) at Edgewood Bowl in Neosho, Missouri.  The first 9 games will be FREE!  Any additional games will be charged the going rate.  The high score for boys and high score for girls will be awarded a $100 scholarship to be paid to the college of their choice.  All games must be bowled by APRIL 25, 2008.
