John Tyson Elementary School has just announced that they will give a scholarship to a Senior who attended their school, so if you attended Tyson Elementary, you are a graduating Senior and are interested in this scholarship application.....COME BY THE COUNSELING CENTER ASAP!

Seniors--We just received the applications for the Arkansas Association of Federal Coordinators scholarship.  This scholarship pays $500 per semester, you must pick up the application in the counseling office ASAP, the deadline to mail is Friday - May 2nd.

Starting next week on Monday, April 28th and continuing through May 2nd, students who are English Speakers of Other Languages will be taking the annual test of English proficiency called the English Language Development Assessment or as it is more often called the ELDA test. The ELDA is an important test which is administered through the Arkansas Department of Education. This test measures the annual progress of English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The ELDA testing dates and assigned room numbers are posted on lists in the main lobby and Sophomore Center. Please check on the ELDA lists so you will know when and where you’ll be taking the ELDA test. Your first hour teacher will know your testing day and location and they will provide you with a reminder card as well. So… sharpen your pencils, study, and be ready to show your “Bull Dog” pride on the day of the ELDA test by taking your time and putting forth your very best effort!

The EOC geometry test may be finished, but we aren’t finished testing you on your geometry knowledge!  Remember, You must be currently enrolled in geometry to play.  Answer the question to the best of your ability.  Take your answer to your geometry teacher.  If you are his or her first student with the correct answer, your name will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Hastings!  Here’s today’s question:

Every year a few of our teachers finish their teaching career.   They say goodbye to SHS and Hello to the pleasures of doing just what they want.  Although these retirement years are deserved, they will be missed at SHS.  We asked them to talk about their memories and their plans for the future.

Today was the last day to purchase your tickets for the Drawing of the 21 speed mountain bike valued at $200 from the men’s soccer players.  Please show your support for the team as they enter the state playoffs Saturday morning at 10:00 am at the Rogers High School Football stadium. Tomorrow the SHS Baseball and softball teams will be traveling to take on the Northside Grizzlies . The baseball game will start at 4 and the Softball game starts at 5. If you want to see the 2008 Arkansas Razorbacks football team in action This Saturday   is  Arkansas annual Razorfest. The gates open for the festivities at 12 o'clock the red-white football game begins at 6.  This is the first season for Head Coach Bobby Petrino. And also this weekend is the NFL draft. Arkansas RB Darren McFadden is projected to be picked by either the Oakland Raiders who have the 4th pick or the New York Jets at 6th pick. and many people believe that Darren's back up Felix Jones will go to the Dallas Cowboys who are the only team with two picks in the first round at 22 and 28. What's not in doubt is who is going 1st to the Miami Dolphins, OT Jake Long of Michigan has signed a 5 year $57.75 million dollar contract, of which $30 million is guaranteed.

 

 

 

 
 

Monday, April 21

All AP club members need to come by Mrs. Fears' room (704) to pick up a t-shirt order form and design.  The money and form will be due back by Wednesday, April 23.  Cost for AP shirts is $15.

Good News!  Due to testing and other issues National Honor Society is extending the blood drive through this week to April 25th.  Collect cans or money ($0.50 a can) in your fourth hour class to win a Chick-Fil-A party. Sign up for the blood drive this week.  We will be sending out your excuse cards on the 28th.  Do not lose them, they will be your ticket for the attendance office to show how long you were in the gym.

Tickets go on sale during lunch today for Senior Showcase 2008!  This is a variety show of skits presented by Theatre 4 seniors.  It will be presented Thursday, May 1st in the Studio Theatre at 9:45am.  Tickets are $3.00 and proceeds help fund the Studio Players Scholarship.  The Studio Theatre seats only 250, so these tickets will sell fast!  Students, please check with your 2nd hour teacher before purchasing a ticket!

CPEP applications are in the Counseling Center !!!   

CPEP is a program designed to prepare students for the ACT college entrance exam.   The program is open to upcoming Juniors and Seniors, who have scored less than 20 on the ACT exam...OR...  who have never taken the ACT.   Each participant will be given a free ACT exam in July.   

 CPEP IS FUN...HAS GREAT INCENTIVES AND LOTS OF SNACKS...BUT IT IS A SERIOUS 4-WEEK COMMITMENT

 

 
 

Monday, April 7

Sophomores, are you interested in participating in student government, planning PROM (getting FREE prom tickets) and community service? If you are then Junior Class Council is for you! Petitions need to be signed and turned in by Thursday April 10th. You can turn them in to Mrs. Potter in room 103 or in to Mrs. Ohnstad in room 602.

Springdale High School FBLA is partnering with Little Johnny's Taqueria again this year.  This Tuesday and Thursday after school and during CAP conferences, there will be Tacos de Asada and Elote (steak tacos and corn) for sale on the front steps of the main building.  Be sure to come by after school beginning at 4:00 until 7:30.  Remind your parents and have dinner with us before your CAP conference.  All proceeds from this sale will go to help our FBLA students attend the National Leadership Conference this June.  So don't forget!  Bring your appetite to the front steps this Tuesday and Thursday!

SENIORS:  The DEADLINE for local scholarships is Friday, April 11th.   You will not be in school that day, so you might want to have all your applications in on Thursday before leaving.    If you are delivering these on Friday, please do so on Friday morning, as two or three scholarships must go to the committees on Friday afternoon.

Time is quickly running out to purchase your 2008 Bulldog Yearbook. Go by Mrs. Froning's room --900 in the Blatt Building -- and pick up an order form to mail to Dallas before it's too late!---anchor---

If you would like to run for class council, you may pick petitions in Ms. Finnell’s office in the sophomore center, the counseling center, the main office, or rooms 401,402 or 512.   Here’s more about class council from some seniors who served this year.

Here’s another great leadership opportunity for you:  Would you like to be a part of one of the greatest groups here at SHS?  Would you like to be a representative for your peers?  Would you like to be involved in Homecoming, pep rallies, Colors Day, etc.  If so, then grab a petition to run for Student Council.  Student Council petitions will be in Mrs. Dolan's room 913 and Ms. Catron's room  614. They are due by THURSDAY and election dates will follow. 

Jennifer Stabach, a student at the University of Arkansas and 2004 graduate of SHS is currently working on her honors thesis project about the past, present, and future of quinceaneras. On Tuesday she will be in the lobby to distribute surveys for students to take home to their mothers which will help her learn more about how Hispanic families in our community are celebrating quinceaneras.  She is asking for your help.  Here’s Jennifer with more.

(N-E-O), you may want to consider attending the N-E-O OPEN HOUSE on either April 17, 18, 24, or 25.   The Open House is designed to help students avoid long lines at the admissions office and get pre-enrollment information.  Please call toll free at 1-888-464-6636.  

This week will be the last week to get Prom tickets at a discounted rate 2 for $40. Prom tickets will be sold at the door, but will be $25 EACH! So get your tickets early and save $10. Tickets can be purchased during both lunches and in room 103.  If you want to take a non-SHS student to PROM, you must fill out a date approval request. These are available in the Main office and are DUE by TUESDAY APRIL 8th.

Tonight the Springdale Soccer and  Softball teams will be in action as the softball team will take on Elkins in a home game that begins at 5 o’ clock.  The soccer teams will take battle it out with our rivals the Har-Ber Wildacts. Varsity girls starts at 5:30 and Varsity boys at 7.

Students, Next week is a very important week in your high school career.  It is CAP, also called Career Action Planning.  What you do on that day determines your entire year next year.   If you have ever tried to get your schedule changed in the fall, you know how much trouble it is and how long the lines are that you must stand in and how you have to get your parents to come up here and sign.  So make it simple.  Make good decisions.  It is not too late to change what you put on your scantron.  But it will be after next week.  So make sure you and your parents come at your scheduled time.  Make SURE you have turned in your health card to your CAP teacher because that is state law.

Please make sure that you and your parents have a CAP conference scheduled with your CAP advisor for next week.  The ONLY way you can confirm your course selection for next year is to attend your CAP conference.  Check with your advisor if you have a question about your appointment time.   If you are a new student to SHS who enrolled in the last month, you will be working with your counselor to confirm your schedule sometime in April.

The Crisis Center is seeking new members for the Student Advisory Board for the 2008-09 school year.  This board is made up of 20 high school students from several area counties.  Members meet monthly with Crisis Center staff and provide insight their YOUTH programming and the TEENLINE.  If you are interested in applying for this opportunity, stop by the counseling center for an application packet.  The DEADLINE for applications is April 18th.

All high school students are welcome to attend the ACADEMY DAY event for the United States Military Service Academies on Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at HarBer High School.   Members of Congressman, John Boozman's staff will be on hand to assist with information on how to obtain an appointment to one of the Service Academies.  Don't miss this great event!

Men’s soccer will be selling soccer shirts Monday for the rescheduled Harber game which is now, Monday night.  This is also our last home game.   We are having a “Kitty Kat” special of $10 to deck out all our fans for this game.  We will also be displaying a mountain bike we are selling tickets to win.  Each ticket is $1 and a portion of our proceeds goes to the Battered Women’s Shelter.    Let’s show this town who does soccer right!

Today SHS Soccer teams play in Fayetteville against Fayetteville. The games will be played at the Ladyback stadium at the U of A. Varsity girls play at 5:30 and Varsity boys at 7:30 The Har-Ber vs. Springdale soccer game will be on Monday the 7th.

Anyone interested in trying out for next year’s golf team needs to come by and sign up in room 507 this week. They also need to pick up a packet about physicals and try-out dates.

If you are interested in participating in a sport next year you are required to have a physical before you may practice or play your sport.  The district will be providing free physicals for student athletes this Saturday, April 5th.

Boys:  10:00 am - 1:00 pm
This will be the ONLY DATE  for free physicals.  
If you do not take advantage of this opportunity you will be required to pay for your own physical before you can practice or play a sport next year.

If you are going to Silver Dollar City with the World Language Club, we will LEAVE at 7am from the Pat Walker Theatre. Do not be late, we will not wait on you and we cannot refund any money...  We should be home by 11pm.  Please bring enough money for food and goodies!

National Honor Society would like to invite SHS student with a grade point of 3.5 or higher to join the SHS chapter.  Poster are hung throughout the school with the candidates names.  If your name is on the list and you would like to join come get an application from Mrs. Dolan in room 913.  National Honor Society students have until Friday April 4th to pay for their graduation supplies of $22.00 to Mrs. Dolan.  Please pay before 7th hour on Friday.

Attention National Medical Honor Society Members:The deadline is nearing for completion of your community service obligation.  Please bring your community service paper, an unofficial copy of your transcript, and $10.00 to pay for your honor cords to Mrs. Phillips.  The deadline is this Friday, April 4th.

The Compass Test will be given on Thursday, April 3rd.  The test will be in the library computer lab and start at the beginning of 1st period.  Any student wishing to take the test will need to go by the main office and see Mrs. Kinder.  The cost of the test is $11.00.  Please bring a calculator and picture ID when reporting to the test.

It is prom time once again. "A Black Tie Affair" 2008 Prom will be on Saturday, April 12th from 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM. Prom will be held at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Springdale.  1 for $25 or 2 for $40.

 Monday, March 10

This Thursday, March 13th, will be a historic date for SHS.  For the first time ever, 10th grade Spanish-speaking students, who are currently in ESL classes, will have the opportunity to demostrate their knowledge of their native language with a written exam.  The results of this test will allow these students to enroll in one of three brand new Spanish courses being offered for Spanish-speakers next year.  Those who are selected to participate will recieve an invitation Thursday to leave their classroom and go to the Field House. 

Students, hurry to buy the best entertainment package in town. Don't miss the Mr. SHS contest this Friday afternoon. Tickets are on sale in the lobby during both lunches for just $2.

While you're getting those tickets, go ahead and vote for your favorite guy. Just 25 cents locks in your vote for your favorite. There's no limit on the number of favorite votes you can cast.

Get your tickets and have your say in the winner...you just can't beat a deal like that.

Because of inclement weather and testing last week, Senior Showcase 2008 has been rescheduled for May 1st.  If you purchased a ticket, please see your sales representative for a refund and we will be advertising soon for our upcoming show.

Would you like to get paid for going to school? Well, guess what--you can! How about leaving campus early to go to work? You can do that, too! The Marketing Work Program allows you to earn school credit for your job. We want YOU athletes, band members, limited english students, agriculture students--everyone! See Ms. Whitaker in 415, Ms. Tracy Reed in 416, or the counseling center for an application. Deadline to apply is March 28th.

The T.C. & Maudine Sanders Scholarship is for seniors in Benton and Washington county.  It requires a completed application, a 1-2 page typed statement telling why you are applying for the scholarship, your qualifications, and your educational and career goals.  You must also attach your family's and your latest tax returns.  Lastly, the scholarship needs 3 letters of recommendations.  The DEADLINE for applications is MARCH 15th, so stop by the counseling center today to get an application.

The Society of American Military Engineers offers two college scholarships worth $1,000 each.   If you plan to study architecture or construction-related engineering, you would be eligible for this scholarship.  Stop by the counseling center today for an application.  Deadline is March 31st.

Seniors:  All Local Scholarships will be available by March 13th ONLINE at www.springdaleschools.org.  Go to Springdale High School and look for Scholarships.  If you do not have internet service stop by the counseling center for an application.  Local scholarships are due in the counseling office by April 11th.    However, there are a couple with earlier deadlines.  Please read each application carefully.

Hey, sophomores!   Are you still looking for an elective for next year or maybe you aren’t really happy with what you bubbled in on that course selection scantron?  If you are currently a sophomore, it’s not too late to choose the introductory TV class called “Radio and TV.”  You’ll learn all about filming and editing and creating stories about people you know or wish you knew.  So get out that scantron sheet and look for the class—it’s located almost at the end of the scantron so it is easy to find!

Mens soccer will be selling soccer T-Shirts Tomorrow (Tuesday) during both lunches to kick off our first conference game against Van Buren Tuesday March 11.  The cost is $15, get your gear for the game and show team spirit as you support the Bulldog Soccer team.  Game times start @ 4:00 for JV Boys, 5:30 Varsity Girls and the Varsity Mens game starts @ 7pm.

This past weekend the Concert Winds and the Symphonic winds performed in the Arkansas Band and Orchestra Association Region 1 Concert Band Assessment. The Concert Winds received a rating of Excellence, and the Symphonic Winds received a rating of Superior (the highest rating
possible). This is the 35 straight year that the Symphonic Winds has received this rating. The Symphonic Winds will also receive the ASBOA Sweepstakes Award which it has received since 1979.

ATTENTION all Juniors:  The nominations for Arkansas Boys and Girls State are in.  If you received an invitation, you MUST come to the informational meeting on Tuesday, March 11 during activity period in the large dining room.  You will be getting important information about interviews and the application process.  If you cannot attend you MUST stop by Mrs Lumpkin's room (717)

If you attended Boys or Girls State last year you MUST come to a meeting on Tuesday in the Large Dining room for this years nominees.  Please stopy by room 717 if you cannot come.

The SHS Band will have it's annual Baked Potato Supper and Silent Auction Thursday, February 28th.  Our event will run from 4:30pm until 7pm.  Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased from band students or at the door.  Take-out will be available.  We have lots of goodies for the silent auction.  We have food certificates or gift cards from 20 different food establishments including Mary Maestri's and Market Place.  We also have memberships from local fitness clubs, rounds of golf and items from a variety of other local businesses.  The Jazz Band will perform during the supper.  Please join us and help support the SHS Bulldog Band.

Seniors... If you have been offered or have received a scholarship, please come down to the counseling center and fill out an announcement for the scholarship wall!
