DRESS GUIDELINES: GENERAL
2007-2008

Rationale:  This policy is intended to assist schools in carrying out their  educational
mission and in becoming healthier, safer places of learning.

A student's appearance and dress should reflect an acceptable common standard in
the interest of decency, cleanliness, safety and health.  There are many details and
styles of clothing that cannot be covered in the dress code.  We hope that students and
parents understand not only the "letter" but also  the "spirit" of the dress code and
choose clothing that is appropriate for a student attending Springdale Public Schools.

A student's appearance and dress shall not disrupt or contribute to disruption of the
educational process or interfere with rights or opportunities of others to learn or teach.

Any apparel (defined as garment or jewelry) which is likely to create a disruption of
classroom or school activity is prohibited.  Such apparel includes, but is not limited to:

1. Apparel that depicts or promotes illegal activities, racism, violence, etc.

2. Apparel that is revealing or suggestive.

3. Apparel that depicts or promotes the use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco  products.

4. Apparel that is deemed gang-related, including, but not limited  to, bandanas,
hairnets, sagging trousers, rolling up one leg of jeans, caps worn sideways,
 backwards, etc.

5. Apparel that presents concerns regarding safety or health issues, including, but
not limited  to, chains, studded bracelets or dog collars, or piercings  deemed
hazardous  to the student or others.

6. Hats and/or caps, or other inappropriate headcovering shall not be worn in  the building.

7. No sunglasses in building.

Students are encouraged to have conversations with school officials if they are
unsure of the appropriateness of any item of apparel.  The school administration
will be responsible for making the necessary decisions regarding questionable
apparel.

The penalties for violation of this policy may include counseling, parent notification,
removal from class (unexcused) until properly attired, and/or probation, as a
minimum, and expulsion from school for one (1) semester as a maximum.

The following interpretive guidelines are provided as clarification and identification
of inappropriate attire:

1. Shorts and skirts that are not at least fingertip length with arms held at sides.

2. Bare midriffs, tops with spaghetti straps or bare backs

3. Tank tops or clothing that reveals the undergarments or cleavage.

Straps must be at least one inch wide.

4. Apparel deemed gang-related (sagging trousers, head rags, bandanas)

5. Clothes that mention certain specific products by name or implication
(i.e. alcohol, beer, tobacco products, pubs, etc.)

6. Clothes that have suggestive or inflammatory slogans.

7. Clothes that promote with pictures or slogans illegal activities, racism,
violence, etc.

8. Overalls when worn with inappropriate top.  Overall must be worn with
straps attached properly.

 NOTE:
Students who do not comply with these guidelines will be held out of class (unexcused) until properly attired.
